When most people get hurt, injured, or become sick, they go to the doctor to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. While the doctor might know what’s going on once they see you, they will often need help in order to get a better look at what might be causing your symptoms.

Doctors often use all sorts of different tests to check different things that can be affecting you. These tests include things such as blood work, MRIs, and X-rays. Many of these tools use diagnostic imaging to help doctors look inside the affected area of your body. Of course, there are many different types of diagnostic imaging exams, but one of the more common and effective diagnostic imaging tests are CT scans.

CT scans use X-rays beams to provide doctors with images of inside the patient’s body. The patient lays down while an arc sends thousands of X-ray beams through the body, collecting them on the other end of the arc in order to compare the strength between the beams. By doing this, the doctor can gather a very imaged detail of inside the body.

  • CT scanning adds X-ray images with the aid of a computer to generate cross-sectional views of a patient’s anatomy.
  • CT scanning can identify normal and abnormal structures and be used to guide procedures.
  • CT scanning is painless and often performed in the outpatient setting.
  • Iodine-containing contrast material is sometimes used in CT scanning. Patients with a history of allergy to iodine or contrast materials should notify their physicians and radiology staff.

 

What is a CT Scan?

Computed Tomography commonly referred to as a CT Scan is a noninvasive medical test that combines special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of your body. These cross-sectional images of the area being studied can then be examined on a computer monitor or printed. These images can be manipulated into different positions, allowing the radiologist to thoroughly examine any area of interest. 

The technologist begins by positioning you on the CT examination table, usually lying flat on your back or possibly on your side or on your stomach. If contrast material is used it will be injected through an intravenous line (IV). Next, the table will move quickly through the scanner to determine the correct starting position for the scans. Then, the table will move slowly through the machine as the actual CT scanning is performed.

 

Eligibility criteria: 10th or 12th  passed from a recognized board is the minimum qualification required.

Since this is a certificate course, it won’t guarantee you supervisor level jobs. After completion of the course, one may land entry level technician’s post at diagnostic labs, medical imaging labs, radiography centres and hospitals or clinics offering CT scan service.

 

Salary:

Starting salary of a CT scan technician depends upon factors like job location, profile of the employer and his/her skills. Depending upon the above mentioned factors, a CT scan technician could earn anywhere between 10-15k Rupees per month (at start).
